Stoneware
Diameter: 84 cm / 2ft 9 ⅛ in.

Ceramicist Jean-François Thiérion utilises the format of immense platters, vases, vessels and jars as canvases for bright and expressive painting. Vivid yellows, pinks and blues are painted in multiple layers, leaving evidence of the rhythm of his process and the traces of his brush. Exemplified in Large Charger, simplicity of form combined with a decorative painterly quality reveal sculptural character and movement.

Jean-François Thiérion studied at CNIFOP (Ceramic School –St Amand en Puisaye, France) in 1979, before setting up his first workshop in Haute-Marne in 1988. He has exhibited extensively across France, Belgium, Denmark and the UK. Recent exhibitions include at Galerie Terra Viva, Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie, France (2023); Museum Le Phare, Andenne, Belgium (2023); Kunstnernes Påskeudstilling, Aarhus, Denmark (2022) and Les Journées de la Céramique, Paris, France (2019). In 2002 and again in 2019, Thiérion was awarded the Pot d’Or at Keramisto, the annual ceramics festival held in The Netherlands, and in 2022, was the winner of the Beroun Ceramics Prize in the Czech Republic.

Since 1998, Jean-François Thiérion has lived and worked in Denmark.
