Carrara marble

48 x 14 ½ x 4 in.
From her home by the River Dart in South Devon, Bridget McCrum watches as birds circle over the water below, and in the sky overhead. Her birds and figures, like those shown here at Roche Court, beautifully capture the essence of nature, rhythm, form, and the natural contours of landscape.
Bridget McCrum (b. 1934 in Yorkshire) trained as a painter at Farnham College of Art in the 1950s, and began to make sculpture in the 1980s. Working primarily in stone, her inspiration is drawn, both consciously and subconsciously, from ancient remains, archaeology, standing stones and objects that have withstood the test of time. Bridget McCrum’s work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including at the Phoenix Gallery, London (1988), and at the School of Architecture, Plymouth (1990). Recent solo shows include The Conference of Birds, Messums, Harrogate (2020), and Past Present: Sculpture by Bridget McCrum, One Canada Square, Canary Wharf (2014). Her work is included in many international public collections, including the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, USA; Rolls Royce Aero Engines, Bristol and Golden Door Foundation, San Diego, USA.
