Functional Sculpture

Incredibly strong, elegant and designed to be used, these hooks are a collaboration between sculptors Kate Theodore and Alan Kean. They emphasise the combination of art and function, creating objects that are dimensional, practical and made to be lived with.

These stoneware hooks are made by slip casting, which produces a thin but exceptionally sturdy ceramic shell. The work is first designed in clay, and subsequently a plaster mould is made, into which the slip is poured. After solidifying, the work is fired and glazed. Currently displayed in the Design House, a limited edition of 30 hooks are made, which are available both individually, and in sets of five.

Roche Artist Plates are special limited edition dining plates designed by artists who have a longstanding relationship with the New Art Centre. The success of the first Roche Plate, designed by Richard Deacon in 2016, has led to collaborations with Alison Wilding, Nigel Hall, Bill Woodrow, Conrad Shawcross, Dorothy Cross and a second design by Richard Deacon.

Roche Artist Plates are made in Stoke-on-Trent, England. Beautiful and functional, all editions of the Roche Plates are English-made fine bone china and are dishwasher safe.

Plates are available individually or as a set. Orders can be made online, via email at nac@sculpture.uk.com or over the phone at +44 (0)1980 862 244.

Jenifer Lloyd Jones established her distinguished reputation as a craftsperson in 1980, when she first began to make her characteristic large stoneware pots. Hand built and decorated with finely scored geometric designs, the urns are high-fired to produce a range of dark, metallic colours.

Images from ancient civilisations were important sources of inspiration, particularly the smooth, black basalt sculptures of the Egyptians and the indigenous pottery of West Africa, where rounded forms are enhanced by a variety of incised and raised geometric decoration.

Jones has exhibited with the New Art Centre since 1995 and had her first solo museum exhibition at City Art Gallery, Leeds in 1990. Jones has also exhibited with The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh, and at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London in 2007.
