Anthony Caro at Roche Court
The New Art Centre at Roche Court Sculpture Park has exhibited Anthony Caro's work many times in our history. On the lawn, the sweeping architectural forms of Palanquin reflect the sky.
It was originally made for the 'sculptural village' that Caro (1924 - 2013) created alongside Frank Gehry at the Triangle Artists' Workshop in New York in 1987. Palanquin is characteristic of Caro's interest in interweaving the interior and the exterior, taking spaces 'down from the plinth' (to use Caro's words) and engaging the spectator on a physical basis.
Caro had numerous major exhibitions during his long career, including retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1975), the Trajan Markets, Rome (1992), the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (1995), Tate Britain, London (2005), and across three museums in Pas-de-Calais, France (2008), to accompany the opening of his Chapel of Light at Bourbourg. He was awarded many prizes in his lifetime, including the Praemium Imperiale for Sculpture in Tokyo in 1992 and the Lifetime Achievement Award for Sculpture in 1997 – as well as a number of honorary degrees from universities in the UK, USA and Europe. He was knighted in 1987 and received the Order of Merit in May 2000.
In 2022, the New Art Centre exhibited Anthony Caro's work in the sculpture park, featuring seven large scale works and a group of smaller painted steel sculptures dating from the 1960s to the 2000s.
