“Predominantly a formalist, I meticulously create imaginative sculptures that are considered and intelligent; forms which tenuously balance coherency and chaos.” – Philip Rae-Scott
Philip Rae-Scott (b. 1991 in Devon) is known for his monumental sculpture. Taking inspiration from manmade structures, machinery, natural processes and the materials that he works with, his work is both architectural and dynamic. Rae-Scott often produces sculptures that are taller than human height, as he explains "It is part of our primal survival instincts to treat an object larger than ourselves with respect and even trepidation.”
All This For A Stitch (2022) is an over-six-foot-tall crystal clear prism of epoxy resin. Inside it, a fully deconstructed 1899 Singer sewing machine that Rae-Scott bought from a junk shop for £1. Each exquisitely engineered component is exposed, catalogued in size order, and suspended in the resin that refracts and glints in the sunlight.
Rae-Scott’s work has been exhibited widely across the UK, with work shown at Tremenheere Sculpture Garden, Cornwall; Gallery 8, London; Shaw House, Newbury; The Strand Gallery, London; Mall Galleries, London and Talos Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden, Calne. Philip Rae-Scott lives and works in Dorset.
