Paul Mount (born 1922) is an important British sculptor who pioneered sculptural abstraction. Renowned for his ability to integrate futurist, geometrical forms with the material sensitivity of African sculpture. Mount was informed by his move to Nigeria in 1955, were he experimented with traditional Nigerian materials, including iroko and ebony – a process that enhanced his understanding of direct carving and casting. Mount conceived his sculptures in relation to their surroundings, creating evocative and playful works that beautifully shift their constituent forms, inspired by his love for music and dance,

Mount believed that "the way that two shapes relate is as important as the way two people relate", highlighting his work’s emphasis on non-descriptive culminations of form.

Rhomba epitomises Mount’s expansive practice as each façade of this formally complex sculpture responds to its surroundings individually, creating a network of angular mirroring’s that remind the viewer of modernist architectural design. Recalling such modernist clarity of form, Rhomba sensitively combines and collates numerous influences, it is a sculpture defined by captivating materiality.
