Jacob van der Beugel at the RA Summer Exhibition
Both Cut and Paste 1 and Cut and Paste 2 explore our relationship with gene editing. Generally considered a topic in science fiction, genetic engineering has begun to permeate our daily lives. These panels depict the genes associated with engineering biofuels, tackling disease and producing food that is increasingly resistant to disease.
The two panels illustrate the technologies in different ways; the harsh slices through the clay blocks in Cut and Paste 1 represent the perception of gene editing as an aggressive and pervasive technology. In contrast, the seamless blurring of the coloured blocks in Cut and Paste 2 shows the acceptance of gene modification and its positive presence.
In these colourful thought-provoking wall panels, modern scientific research is depicted using a material that we are intuitively familiar with, clay. Through the use of ceramics, an ancient and timeless practice, Jacob van der Beugel’s work tackles our contemporary understanding of new technologies, ancestry, legacy and the self.
