Articulation Prize at Roche Court

Yesterday we were delighted to host our heat for the National Gallery’s Articulation Prize. In our Design House, 16 students from 16 schools delivered presentations about a piece of art or media that resonated with them for the competition.

Each student delivered thoughtful and expressive presentations on artists and makers including; Lucian Freud, Vasili Pukirev, Rex Weyler, Ian Chamberlain, Lou Hamilton, Philip Hermogenes Calderon, Camila Salinas, Sun Yuang and Peng Yu, Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, Banksy, Francis Bacon, Alexander McQueen, Peter Paul Rubens, Mire Lee and Jamie Reid.

The heat was adjudicated by Andrea Rose and William Feaver.

Andrea Rose CMG, OBE is an art historian, curator and former Director of Visual Arts at the British Council from 1994-2014, and was responsible for Britain’s representation at the Venice Biennale. She has written widely on British art, and in 2021, compiled the Catalogue Raisonné of Leon Kossoff’s oil paintings. She is currently on the Board of Directors at the Burlington Magazine.

William Feaver is a writer, broadcaster, curator and painter. From 1975-1998, he was the chief art critic of the Observer, and from 1994, a visiting professor at Nottingham Trent University. Feaver has curated exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery, the V&A and the Tate. His book, The Lives of Lucian Freud: Frame 1968-2011 was published in 2020.

Articulation was established in 2006 by the Roche Court Educational Trust, with the goal of engaging young people with art, and developing their confidence and ability to look, think and speak about art. Schools and students were invited to the New Art Centre at Roche Court Sculpture Park to deliver their Articulation presentations.

The competition was conceived as a tribute to the art historian Lord Clark, in honour of his commitment to the study and promotion of the arts. By 2009, Articulation had become a national competition, partnering with Clare College, Cambridge, where the first national finals were adjudicated by Antony Gormley.

In 2022, the National Gallery took over Articulation. It now involves thousands of students each year in its national annual Prize and outreach programmes.
