Art in Focus I Nigel Hall
This week we are celebrating the publication of Nigel Hall: Sculpture & Drawings. Written by Jon Wood, this monograph looks at Nigel Hall's work in relation to sculptural developments in Britain, Europe and North America. It presents the two main strands of Hall's practice - sculpture and drawing.
Jon Wood is an art historian, writer and curator, specialising in modern and contemporary sculpture. Recent publications include Michael Sandle: Works on Paper (2023), William Turnbull: International Modern Artist (2022) and Tony Cragg: Stacks (2021). Throughout the years, Nigel Hall has explored the ways in which sculpture alters the viewer's perception of space as they move around the work. Particularly evident in his large-scale outdoor phosphor bronze works, which are currently sited at Roche Court, the landscape reveals itself through framed spatial composition. Parallax - the apparent shift of an object against a background due to a change in observer position - has been a notable device of his, especially in his earlier works.
Nigel Hall (b.1943) is one of the UK's most distinguished sculptors. Born in Bristol, Nigel Hall studied at the West of England College of Art, Bristol and the Royal College of Art, London from 1964 -1976. From 1967- 1969 he studied in the USA on the Harkness Fellowship. He has worked from his studio in London since the 1970's. Hall has exhibited extensively worldwide and is represented in important public and private collections in the USA, Asia, Australia and Europe including Tate Gallery, London; Musee National D’Art Moderne, Paris; National Galerie, Berlin; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Japan; Louisiana Museum, Denmark and the National Museum of Art, Osaka, Japan.
Nigel Hall: 12 Images 12 Poems
In 2019, Nigel Hall collaborated with writer, curator and poet, Andrew Lambirth on a set of twelve screen prints and poems, which evolved from conversations based on the calendar months and the seasons of life.
Multiple screens were created for each print in order to build a very thin, transparent layer of colour, one on top of the other. Each colour was layered several times to reach the high level of saturation required. The works were printed by hand onto 300gsm acid-free Somerset paper at the Print Studio in Cambridge and were created as an edition of 75.
Prints are available to purchase individually.
