Jenifer Jones

Jenifer Jones established her distinguished reputation as a craftsperson in 1980, when she first began to make her characteristic large stoneware pots for which she is now well-known. These are hand-built and decorated with finely scored geometric designs. The urns are high-fired to produce a range of dark, metallic colours. They are generally placed as sculptural or focal points in the landscape.

Jones has exhibited with the New Art Centre since 1995 and had her first museum solo exhibition at City Art Gallery, Leeds in 1990. Jones has also exhibited her work multiple times with The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh and at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London in 2007.

I work in a long tradition of vessel making, using the simplest of basic materials: clay and metal oxides from the earth. Also, I’m making in ways that have been around for thousands of years... Something this tradition gives you as a maker is a language that everyone instinctively understands. Maybe it’s related back to the human body; neck, shoulder, foot for example are terms we use to name parts of a pot after all.
