Biography

(1946–)

Eileen Hogan was born in London. She studied at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, the Royal Academy school, the British School of Archaeology in Athens and the Royal College of Art. While at Camberwell she became very interested in the relationship between words, letters and images and published three books with the Lion and Unicorn Press in the 1970s.

After visiting Ian Hamilton Finlay's garden at Little Sparta in 1997, she started to sketch and she returned again both before and after his death in 2006 taking the garden, his work and the man himself as her subjects. The Little Sparta paintings convey the respite and escape offered by the isolation of the garden's setting in the Pentland Hills and a recurrent subject are Finlay's trio of beehives. Physically empty but potent with metaphor, the beehives are like small temples, her paintings of them both homage to Finlay and a painterly and poetic memorial to him.

Eileen Hogan has exhibited at The Fine Art Society, the Royal Academy, the Victoria and Albert Museum and Yale Center for British Art. She is currently Research Professor at the University of the Arts London.

Eileen's exhibition 'Vacant Possession' was at the New Art Centre in February 2013.
The work from this show will be at The Fleming Collection from 11 June - 17 August 2013
